Library Love – Free books waiting for you

Posted by: Claire | January 21, 2012

Is there a more amazing place than a library? A place you can walk in for free and then walk out with a stack of books! I think that every new baby should be handed a library card along with their birth certificate. The fact that so many are closing makes my heart hurt, because they are truly magical places.

I normally order my books online and get Mum to collect them for me. I’ve always got the maximum number of fifteen out on my ticket, a range of fiction and non-fiction. I can’t believe how many different books they have on a vast range of subjects. I wish I had more energy to do more reading, I barely scratch the surface and would love to spend all day every day reading.

Within a library are a million stories waiting to be discovered, worlds to escape into, adventures to go on, mysteries to solve, friends to make and people to fall in love with. No matter who you are, or what your life is like, there is a story for you, you just have to open a book and dive in. If you don’t like it, if it doesn’t make your heart sing and your pulse race, then give up and try a new one.

In the past reading has got a bad reputation, “uncool” or “too hard”, which is completely untrue, if you find the right book. Amazing people like J K Rowling have re-opened the door to literature and libraries, we should be very grateful to them. Also the introduction of e-books and audio books have made “reading” even more accessible to more people.

All of these are available through your library and they’re free if you’re housebound in the UK, you can even get special permission for someone else to pick up your books for you and you can order them online for collection. You get an email or letter to tell you when they’re in. It’s so much easier than giving someone a list or trying to tell them what you’re looking for. The excitement of receiving a book or audio book that’s free to enjoy is wonderful!

You can find your local library by Googling it or contacting your local council. There aren’t many things in life that are free anymore, so we really need to support our libraries to make sure they continue doing such brilliant work. In truth you’ll be getting the best of the deal!

I am all over this, Claire!

I’m such a library hound myself… I take the kids every Saturday & sometimes go during the week by myself!!

I’m in Florida (in the US) and in our county you can also request anything from any library in the county & they’ll ship it to the library closest to you for easy pickup… I cannot tell you how much I adore this & use it each & every week!

So grateful that my kids are growing up as into books as I am… It’s really a gift to be able to read and have all of this delicious fabulousness at our fingertips so readily….

    ahhhhhh

I think being introduced to books was one of the best things my Mum ever did for me, she opened a door to a lifetime of learning and growing. We used to do these summer reading challenges at the library and I’d end up completing it about three times; but I just loved the experience, the challenge and the books!

We go to the library ALL the time! I love it because Austin has a great library system where you can put any book on hold (that’s in an Austin public library – we have like 20 branches!) and they send it to the library closest to you for easy pickup. There’s also inter-library loan like Angel mentioned. The library is one of my favorite places to visit – so quiet and peaceful – and you certainly can’t beat the prices for all of that learning. Love it.

It does have that wonderful atmosphere of stillness, of knowledge waiting to be discovered. It gives me chills – in a good way!
